Development Intervention 8:
Support of value chains in handicraft, fruits and vegetables in Siem Reap Province

Main Activities

  • Attending 3 field days which took place in Bakompleung, Ou and Sophy village. In Bakompleung village regarding to Bitter Gourd Planting, that have the 27 Participants was jointed were coming from 2 different districts :

- Prasatbakong district (2 villages)

- Soutr Nikum District (3 villages)

- Mr. Soun Chumnet commune leader of Chansor Trbong

In the event Mrs. Chon Seng the plot owner has sharing the experiences and explicated about bitter gourd planting to the attendants. All the participants they are very interesting about bitter gourd planting technique and the event dominated by detail questions to the plot holder (Mrs. Chon Seng) related to the technical aspect such as to seedling, soil preparation, planting technique, fertilizer usage, pesticide usage and variety handling. The second event took place in Ou village, Songvey commune, Chikreng district talk about cucumber which 22 participants were coming from two different districts (Soutr Nikum and Chikreng district) and other one took place in Sophy village, 3 districts residents were jointed such as Soutr Nikum, Pouk and Prasatbakong has 18 participants totally.
  • Joint the meeting in Department of Commerce with Ms. Anna, Mr. Tep Beng Thay, and Mr. Thomas discuss about Plan of operation in 2012 and discuss about how to conduct the questionnaire with input retailers and collectors.
  • · On the 13th January 2012 attending the meeting RED program and PDA (Provincial Department Of Agriculture) validation of Plan Of Operation 2012 took place in PDA office. Participants: RED (Ms. Anna Stancher, Mr. Tep Beng Thay, Ten Samrach) and PDA (Mr. Meourng Sonitya Director and Mr. Pen Bunthoeun Deputy Director). The topic discussed were:

1. Review and validation of Plan of Operations for 2012

- Main activities in agriculture value chains

- Main activities for institutional capacity building

2. Objective for 2012-2013 and outline of strategy

- Proposed Plan of Operation

- Discussion

3. Coordination RED-PDA

- Communication lines and meetings

- PDA participation in steering Committee Meeting (January 2012)

- New district partner staff at Banteay Srei and Svay Leu

As the following discussion took time almost a half day, the Director of PDA Mr. Meourng Sonitya said that the plan of operation was quite good but on behalf of PDA have to discuss more deeply about this plan with all PDA staff to assure which point should be take out and which point should be insert more in plan of operation. So that PDA director asks for the next meeting to finalize validate the plan of operation on 19th January 2012.
  • · Attending the training course about Pest Management on Vegetable conducted by EW staffs which took place two different places, one in Sombath village, Khar Por commune which 15 participants were jointed and otherwise took place in Somrong village Khar Por commune, Soutr Nikum district which 9 Participants were attended. The event was dominated by detail question refer to insect, fungicide, cultivation technique and pesticide usage.
  • · Attending exchange visit in Preykrouch village, Krbeyreal commune, Pouk district in which the participants came from 4 different districts (Prasabakong, Soutr Nikum, Pouk, and Siem Reap) and joint by Deputy Director of PDA Mr. Ben Buntheoun. The event took time a whole day on 26 January 2012, started from 8:00 am till 5: 00 pm, majority of attendances were old demo farms, new demo farms and collectors (50% are women). The exchange visit agenda are:

a. Opening program exchange visit was by Deputy Director of PDA

b. Showing the objective of exchange visit

c. Group division

d. Presentation of group

e. Advantage usage of modern equipment and variety

f. Question and Answers

g. Closing program

  • · Collect the information from input supplies and collectors:

a. Input supplies interview was conducted with 8 retailers in Prasatbakong and Soutr Nikum district started from 2nd week of January 2012, the information got was:

- (+) 8 input retailers can provide the correct info about seed, pesticide and fertilizer usage (some of input retailers maybe are not clear about dosage pesticide and know well about appropriate time to apply fertilizer on crops)

- Ordering/purchasing agriculture products is depending on business size of retailer if big input retailers they order 1-2 time/month and medium input retailers they order 3-4 time/month.

- Spending on purchasing agriculture products is about 1500$-3000$ for big input retailers and medium input retailers is 100$-300$.

- Income input retailers estimate percentage of total sale around 50%-70%

- The products of seed in most demand are EW Seed Company and pesticide form different of company in equal amounts.

- Input retailer stock is sufficient in products but some time is run out of stock also

- Input retailers get information about vegetable cultivation technique from EW staffs, asking clients, PDA and other is their own knowledge and experiences.

- Payment by client to input retailer is made: cash immediately and some on credit only especially neighborhoods that they know well each other.

- Discount is depending on quantity of products and kind of clients: if collectors purchase they get 5% discount and regular clients purchase they get 2-3% discount.

b. Collectors interview was conducted with 8 collectors in Prasatbakong and Soutr Nikum district. The information got was:

- Collectors has between 5-13 producers (regularly produce) and have clients in market average is 4-8 retailers and 2-4 wholesalers which based in Phsar Leur and Samaky market

- When collectors start work with new farmers the collectors will be providing farmer such as technical advice, pre-finance support (buy seed, fertilizer, pesticide, fungicide and tools) by no interest rate and the farmers will be repay back to collectors when harvest time.

- Collectors can advice to farmer correct on variety handling and can’t advice on pesticide usage and technical issue completely exactly

- The distance of village to other village around 1-4 Km

- Average vegetable production most producers is 40 Kg/day

- Mostly collectors can purchase average vegetable production around 200Kg/day

- Mostly collectors paying on purchasing vegetable from the farmers average is 30$-50$ per day, main spending in collectors investment are pay on purchasing products from farmer and purchase input for farmers.

- The vegetable crops prices raise always during the year good prices are long bean, chilli and egg plant and crops has often very low price are cucumber and crucifers

- Vegetable crops which easy to transport are long bean and cucumber and the crops which difficult to transport are cauliflower and bitter gourd

- The crops can be easily to preserved in time of over production are cucumber and chilli

- The vegetable products which would be rise good prices, but are not yet produced are chilli, egg plant and tomato

- Related to the market information most collectors always sell products to the same clients and the main complain of client in market are bad quality of products , high prices, bad packaging

- Mostly perception of collectors the main completion in their business is importers

- The price setting to purchase vegetable products depends on market prices and the payment of retailers and wholesalers made is immediately

- Suppliers networks some are produce vegetable regularly and some are not irregularly because of some season like rainy season they have no up land area

Main Activities

· Go to Publish works and Transportation Department to do the motor transferring from GIZ to PDA

· Assisting the 2 field day in Tropangtrom village, Sout Nikum district and Sophy village, Kungtrung commune, Bakong district. The participants each event at less 20 villager was jointed and come from different village. The field day conduct in Tropang Trom village was about cucumber planting with new technology ( drip irrigation and plastic cover ) use good quality seed ( EW seed ) and planting follow by new technique was introduce by Regional Economic Development Program/Green-Belt Siem Reap Province. Mr. Oun the owner of farm and the input supplier as well said : actually vegetable cultivation it is important source of income for rural residents, for my plot (50m*100m) I could harvest more than 2T and the price for this year is quite good as well ( 1000 Riel/Kg ). Vegetable cultivation is quite hard a little bit but it is better than we go far away to find the job such as garment worker, construction worker or other works, if we try to growing vegetable regularly and take more attention as much as we work outside so the profit come out of the vegetable farming it will be better than that works, He added. The other field day was conducted in Sophy village, Kungtrung commune about ridge gourd planting which the owner use the good seed ( EW seed ) and cultivation follow new technique so that farm is getting the good result, in this event the attendances were come from different 3 district.

· Attending the meeting in main office about to show overall RED program to GIZ deputy

· Field visit producers in Bosthom, Somrong, Sombat, Domreychlong, Chouk, Sophy, Sreta and Bakompleung village.

· Field visit collectors (7 collectors was met) to gather information relation to market demanding and popular vegetable in the markets and some constrain of them with producers and counsel some technical support and dialogue concept about Farmer Group creating by the collectors indicate their producers who are enthusiasm to this concept and keen to catch up this opportunity.

· Field visit Demo farm (6 demo was met) to advise some technique issue, and supporting the book keeping writing.

· Field visit input supplies (3 input supplies) to gather information about seed selling, pesticide and fungi and provide technical support.

· Attending meeting with PDA Deputy Director to talk about:

1, Overview of RED objective and activities 2008-2011

2, Presentation of strategy for 2012-13 and discussion

3, Presentation of draft plan of Operation 2012 and discussion

4, Coordination arrangements between PDA and GIZ and responsibilities in implementation of plan of operation

· Meeting with new network (collectors) in Tatrav, Sophy and Sret leck villages.

· Attending the monthly meeting in PDA office

The meeting was discussed about overall result of the partner staff in implementation program in December, 2011 and problem encounter during execution, after we had consolidate the problem issue such as:

- Insect and Diseases

- Lack of EW seed variety to provide new target area

- PDA staff request to program about herbicide for pineapple planting

- PDA staff request to the program to provide the training about rice seed purify technique.

Next steps

· Attending the field day on – 04/01/12 about bitter gourd in Bakkompleung village, - 17/01/12 about bitter gourd in Sophy village, -

· Field follow up Demo farm and advising

· Field follow up and advice producers networks in Prasatbakong District and Sout Nikum District.

· Field visit with collector networks and activities expand to new collector in local and advising some technical support

· Field visit the input supply to gather the information about the change of producer of using vegetable seed using and insecticide using and advising some technique

· Discuss with the producers and collector networks about Farmer Group of vegetable growing

· Attending the training course to the farmers conduct by EW seed

Main Activities

- Meeting collectors network

- Most of their producers can’t growing anything because of has many rain fall

- All the vegetable was injure by rain therefore they can’t purchase vegetable products go to market is regularly, the collector could purchase in 2 day interval and low down quantity, so all this issue is led the price of vegetable on market increasingly high up.

- The Cultivators living dissimilar village such as Somrong, Sombat, Sophy, and Bosthom I had been met and advice some technique in vegetable growing as though how setting line of cropping depend on the season, setting up drainage system of farm, cutting the old leave to prevent downy mildew and tread.

- A grandma 47 years old is the demo farm live in Sombat village said that most of villager in the village was change routine work to adapt new idea such as seeding stage they set up

porch seedbed and cover plastic protect water and insect net using ,so far the villagers never do like that. The planting have good technique could get highyield, Ming Sockha neighborhood said.


-Sophy village the one of the village that our program works with so far, the villager in this village is so active in growing vegetable.

Some of collectors live in the same village said, even this season has much rain and they haven’t the land to grow, they still go to find the high land to do, but unfortunately they encounter many risks such as more water, insect, and diseases.

- On 18 October 2011 a field was conduct in Sophy village, Contrung commune, Bakong district, Siem Reap province, by East West Seed International staff which has 3 villager attending such Tatrav Sophy and Domrey Chlong village in total all participants is 25 villagers.

Agenda of field day are: - Program opening

- The objectives of program are : 1 to show farmer about good experience technique growing ridge gourd of Mrs. Mom Chi and 2 to show quality seed of East West Seed

- Field visit and experience showing of the farm owner

- Experience sharing and question and answering

- Closing program

At that time the owner of farm Mom Chi she has commentated about the experience of ridge gourd growing to the participants, after the commentary of Mom Chi and field visited most of the participants has many questioning to her and show the difficulty of growing. Some said that the vegetable that they planting are facing many problems such downy mildew and insect and rotting from the rain and some time no fruit also. As the moment a villager from Domrey Chlong village had showing experience about planting ridge gourd to the attendances as well, lately after we get all the information we could determine the real of problem are lack of technique in growing of farmer, use the domestic variety that led to get low yield and more disease and insect damaging, fertility using and wrong pesticide/fungicide using. So we had explain to participants more deeply about technique growing, fertilizer using, pesticide/fungicide using and variety select to grow.

Short Report

Main Activities

- Meeting with collectors: to discuss and ask information about price and quantity of vegetable, quantity of producers in village, and problem encounter of producers in growing vegetable.

MingYom she a collector live in Sophy village, Kontrung commune , Bakong district said that: Now day vegetables product is irregular and small amount to buying, In the village have have not farmer growing vegetable because they aren't upland and the busy season
also. Most of villager gone to growing vegetable outside the village like Bosthom village Khar Pou commune. Because of the quantities of producers reduce as of reason above so the quantity of product that is less than other month and have a little variety of vegetable such as Bitter Gourd, Cucumber and Long bean. The quantities of vegetable she could purchase are Bitter Gourd 100Kg/2day, Cucumber 70Kg/2day and Long bean 30Kg/2 day.


Rem Kros he also collector in Bakom pleung village said that Most of famer in this village they are planning to planting cauliflower many family in the village. For the vegetable product is not have enough to purchasing nowadays sometime have no vegetable to the market because of it is difficult to growing during this month and otherwise it is the busy season also.


Sock Yean she is farmer live in Somrong village, Khar Poar commune, Sort nikum district. in her plot bitter gourd 12Kg/3dt she growing vegetable such as wax gourd and bitter gourd and bitter but is not better, because of it has many rain fall and she is not take care enough also, and for the yeild that she could get isay, bitter 6kg/3day. For the next planning she would likeo growing Hot pepper adn egg plant and bitter, the day that she will sowing seedling is middle of September.


Hom Pean live in Somrong village, a hard work famer in village with facing regret of her cucumber which damaged by big rain fall frequently for few day that cause cucumber is water stress and fungi. Event the situation is not good to the cucumber, this farmer still carries on tread and take care it. This cucumber I could harvesting around 500Kg already with the price is 1200r/Kg, therefore my was damaged but i think that am not loses, just get profit little bit only, she said.

The effective of extension of program to farm on vegetable technique that we could note down such as sowing seedling before the farmer always broadcast directly to the soil but right now the change to do porch seedling or using plastic tray to sowing seed before planting.

- Field trip to visit Organic Rice Prodution Group in Srercheng Commune, Chom Kiri District,
Kompot Province. This FO was created in 2003 which supported by GTZ until 2007 and 2008 – 2009 CEDAC provided the technique. The member until nowday is 369 members and has total land size is 329 ha in producing organic rice production. During 2002-2004 this group could produce organic rice sell to Chuck District , Kompot market, , Konghing Company, CCRD and CEDAC and then in 2007-2008 the group has encounter the difficulty with competitive from many middleman purchasing rice for the member in wet rice selling to other country such as Vietnam, Thailand… So it is the critical problem of the group in competitive purchasing product because the group couldn’t purchase wet rice to sell or to drying (lack of technique drying) otherwise the cost of product is not suitable compare to simple rice.
- Field trip to visit Demo farmer CEDAC in Tramkok district. Those farm has many technology
such as fish raising, ell raising, worm raising, and rice planting, vegetable growing, and frog raising. The owner farm said that before this plot 3000 msq he just planting the rice only one and the rice yield could get only 200-300 Kg per year, so after he had get training from CEDAC about integrate farming he started to developed by himself by step by step until right now, us the result of his activities his farm could get the revenue 1500 USD per year. so that why this result has enable his family livelihood is better.
